Aldubáran – satellite

The theme of the collaboration between Aldubáran and Violet Composers’ Collective is “Satellite”.

In Faroese, the name Aldubáran conjures up images of the sea, since “alda” and “bára” are both words referring to waves. But Aldubáran is also a reference to the star Aldebaran, whose name is Arabic and means “The Follower”. This brought up associations with satellites, both natural and man-made, with stars, planets, and moons, and with apostles.

With this in mind, members of the Violet Composers’ Collective have composed six brand new works for Aldubáran, which will be premiered at Hátún on July 7. Each work takes on the theme “Satellite” in its own way, with as varied points of departure as a NASA photograph, a historical UFO encounter, and Kepler’s ‘Harmony of the World’.

The Violet Composers’ Collective

was founded in New York City in August 2024. The composers met during the master’s composition program at New York University where they had the opportunity to collaborate. After graduating, they decided to continue their collaboration by forming a collective where they could support each other’s artistic endeavors and organize collaborations with musicians and ensembles.

The ensemble Aldubáran

was formed in 1995 by a group of Faroese musicians keen on promoting and performing Faroese contemporary classical music. Aldubáran currently consists of 14 musicians.

Aldubáran has commissioned, recorded and performed numerous works by Faroese composers, internationally as well as in the Faroe Islands to great acclaim.
