Cantabile Women's Choir
Conductor: Pauli í Sandagerði
The Faroe Islands are blessed with many talented songwriters who, over the past fifty years, have enriched and expanded the Faroese song tradition with a series of good and beautiful songs that we have listened to and sung along with, and which today have become part of our shared voice and identity.
At the Summartónar concert, Cantabile will breathe new life into some of these many song gems, and at this concert we will perform works by, among others:
Unn Paturson
Pauli í Sandagerði
Teitur Lassen
Examples of songs that also will be part of the concert:
“Gullspunnin” // Eivør Pálsdóttir
”Hjartasorg” // Byrta
“Alt annað enn vanligt” // Dania Tausen
About the choir…
The women’s choir Cantabile began as a young girls’ choir in the early 1980s under the direction of Pauli í Sandagerði. During its first 20 years, the choir was very active and has many concerts behind it, both at home and abroad.
The choir has a rich history and a strong identity. Although Pauli í Sandagerði moved to Vejle in 2000, the choir has remained in contact with him and has carried out several projects together with him, including participation in a Nordic choir festival in Copenhagen and a concert tour in Jutland.
In 2014, Cantabile released an album titled Seinnameiri, mainly featuring choral works by Pauli í Sandagerði. On several occasions, Cantabile has collaborated with Hanus G. Johansen, and in 2015 the album "Heitur kossur" was released, with songs by Hanus and choral arrangements by Pauli. This was followed by a concert tour in Reykjavík in 2015.
Nearly all the women in Cantabile are experienced choir singers who are also active in several other choirs.
About the Conductor
Pauli í Sandagerði (1955) is one of the pioneers of Faroese music. He began at a young age as a pianist, but over the years he became increasingly active as a composer. His musical output is wide-ranging: he has written folk music, chamber music, and contemporary classical music. One of his major works is the rock opera Jesus og Makedonarin.
Pauli í Sandagerði has conducted many choirs, but Cantabile is the choir he always returns to.
